Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) in Ontario play a vital role in delivering high-quality laboratory services, supporting diagnostics, and ensuring patient safety. As the medical laboratory field continues to evolve, so do the opportunities for specialization and certification.
The College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) is sharing information on behalf of the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists’ Assistants (CCCPA) and the newly launched Canadian Certification Council of Pathology Laboratory Specialists (CCCPLS)—two national bodies offering certification opportunities for professionals working in surgical and autopsy pathology settings.
Who Are CCCPA and CCCPLS?
The CCCPA certifies Pathologists’ Assistants (PAs)—healthcare professionals who work under the supervision of a pathologist and support the examination of surgical specimens and autopsies. Eligible candidates for PA certification are graduates from NAACLS-accredited Master’s PA programs within the past five years.
In response to the need for greater recognition of additional roles within pathology, the CCCPLS was launched in January 2025. This new certification body establishes standards and certifies professionals in roles such as:
- Biopsy Processing Technicians
- Simple Dissection Technicians
- Autopsy Technicians
What This Means for MLTs
These certifications present an opportunity for MLTs with relevant training and experience to expand their credentials and explore new scopes of practice. While these roles are not government-regulated, many employers across Canada now require or prefer certification as a condition of employment, as it demonstrates a commitment to continuing competency and adherence to national standards.
Certification may be of interest to:
- MLTs and Medical Laboratory Assistants/Technicians (MLAs)
- Individuals with science-based post-secondary education
- Those with work experience related to surgical or autopsy pathology
