Maintaining the confidentiality of personal health information (PHI) is a core responsibility for all healthcare professionals. At the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), we recognize the importance of supporting our Registrants in understanding privacy obligations and preventing breaches.
To highlight this critical aspect of professional practice, CMLTO is launching a five-day #PrivacyInPractice campaign. Each day, we will share new resources designed to help Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) understand key privacy concepts, the consequences of breaches, and practical strategies for maintaining confidentiality.
Throughout the week, we will be sharing:
- An informational one-pager explaining concepts like the “Circle of Care” and common privacy terms.
- A new Professional Practice Learning Program (PPLP) module on privacy, offering guidance for everyday practice and useful for those selected for the Practice Review audit.
- CMLTO’s updated Privacy and Confidentiality Policy, detailing obligations, breach consequences, and the College’s approach to addressing privacy concerns.
These resources were developed to provide MLTs with clear, accessible tools to support safe, ethical, and accountable practice. CMLTO will continue to update our privacy webpage with guidance and resources, so Registrants can consult it at any time to stay informed.
The #PrivacyInPractice campaign reflects our commitment to protecting patients, maintaining public trust, and supporting MLTs in their professional development. We encourage all Registrants to explore the resources, apply what they’ve learned in daily practice, and continue using our privacy webpage as a reference.
We also encourage folks to share our posts each day and use our campaign hashtag #PrivacyinPractice to spread awareness about each of these key resources.
Access all privacy resources here. All content is available in French as well.
