CMLTO Recognizes World Patient Safety Day

On September 17, the World Health Organization (WHO) leads World Patient Safety Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about the importance of making healthcare safer for everyone.

This year’s theme, “Patient safety from the start,” emphasizes the need for safety to be built into every part of health systems – from the first point of care through diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.

Safe healthcare depends on strong systems and reliable processes. At the core of those systems are medical laboratory services. Every day, Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) in Ontario perform and interpret laboratory tests that provide critical information for diagnosing illnesses, monitoring treatment, and guiding clinical decisions. Without accurate and timely lab results, safe and effective care is not possible.

At the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), our statutory mandate is public protection. We fulfill this by ensuring safe access to healthcare through the regulation of Ontario’s MLTs.

By regulating the profession, CMLTO helps safeguard the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of medical laboratory services – a critical foundation of patient safety.

On World Patient Safety Day, we join WHO and health organizations around the world in reaffirming our commitment to ensuring patients can trust the care they receive.
