The CMLTO Board of Directors is the governing body of the CMLTO, which sets out the strategic and policy direction for the College in the interest of the public in Ontario.
Composition of the CMLTO Board of Directors
The CMLTO Board is composed of Public Board Members, who are appointed by the provincial government, and Professional Board Members (MLTs), who are elected or appointed from Registrants pursuant to Medical Laboratory Technology Act, 1991 and the CMLTO By-Law.
As self-regulated professionals, MLTs have the opportunity to play an active role as a CMLTO Board Member in shaping the future of the profession in Ontario and serving the public interest.

Duties and Responsibilities of Board Members
The Board Members shall act in the best interests of the College and the public.
In the performance of their duties and responsibilities, the Board members shall comply with:
- The provisions of the:
- Board Policies, and
- Any rules adopted by the Board of Directors from time to time.
Additionally, the Board Members should be familiar with:
Director Skills and Knowledge
All Board Members are expected to be effective contributors. The desired skills, traits and knowledge include:
- The ability to work with a group to make decisions,
- The ability to understand and follow democratic processes,
- A willingness to devote time and effort to the work of the CMLTO and the Board,
- Good communication skills, and,
- An understanding that the goal of the CMLTO is to serve and protect the public.

The following eight (8) electoral districts are established for the purpose of the election of Registrants to the Board of Directors:

NUMBER OF REGISTRANTS TO BE ELECTED IN EACH ELECTORAL DISTRICT

TERM OF OFFICE OF BOARD MEMBERS
The term of office of a Registrant elected to the CMLTO Board of Directors as a Professional Board Member is three (3) years, which commences on January 1st of the calendar year following the Board election.
The term of office of a Registrant elected to the Board of Directors to fill a vacancy starts immediately and continues until the end of the current term.
THREE-YEAR REGULAR ELECTION SCHEDULE (2026-2028)
The election of Registrants to the Board takes place annually on a three-year rotation through the eight electoral districts. Staggered elections ensure the CMLTO always retains a base of experienced and knowledgeable Board Members who can assist with transitioning new Members to the Board. The nomination process is completed by the end of May and voting is completed in October.

NOMINATION PROCESS
The candidates considering standing for election to the CMLTO Board of Directors shall:
1. Review the CMLTO By-Law / Election of Board Members.
2. Confirm their eligibility to stand for election as per CMLTO By-Law / Eligibility to Stand for Election.
3. Complete, sign and return the 2026 Board Election Package to the Registrar and CEO by May 29, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
As part of the Election Package, candidates are required to complete the CMLTO Board Competency and Leadership Characteristics Self-Assessment. This self-assessment confirms that candidates meet, or partially meet, the Board-approved competency-based eligibility criteria outlined in the CMLTO Board Competency and Leadership Characteristics Profile.
The self-assessment is intended to support reflection, transparency, and awareness of the competencies and leadership characteristics that contribute to effective Board service. Candidates are not expected to meet every competency at the time of nomination and may indicate their willingness to further develop any areas for growth if elected.
Candidates must also successfully complete the CMLTO Board of Directors Candidate Training relating to CMLTO’s governance approach and the duties, roles and responsibilities of Board Members, including participating in an interview with the Registrar and CEO.
ELECTION PROCESS
Registrants, who are eligible to vote in the electoral district in which an election is to be held, will be provided with a CMLTO Board Election Voting Package on August 28, 2026.
The CMLTO Board Election Voting Package will include:
- A ballot listing of all eligible candidates in the electoral district,
- Election biography and personal statement of each candidate in the form and manner and by the date determined by the Registrar and CEO,
- The means to cast a vote, a ballot or in the case of an online election system, access to online voting system,
- Closing date and time of the election period, and
- A voting guide with instructions.
Online Voting Start Date : August 28, 2026
Online Voting End Date : October 2, 2026
The term of office for the Board Members elected in regular elections will start on January 1, 2027, and end on December 31, 2029. The term of office for the Board Members elected in by-elections will start on January 1, 2027, and end on December 31, 2027.
