The CMLTO was created to regulate the profession of medical laboratory technology in the public interest. An important component in fulfilling that mandate is our Patient Relations Program (PRP).

The College’s PRP is directed by Council and includes all initiatives aimed at improving the public’s understanding of medical laboratory technology as a profession. Medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) play a vital role in ensuring positive patient outcomes.

• Through our public relations and communications efforts, the College seeks to raise the profile of the profession in the eyes of the public.
• The College works to ensure that members are supported in their efforts to promote positive patient relations by providing up-to-date standards of practice and guidelines.
• The PRP aims to improve the public’s understanding of the role of the College in regulating MLTs.
• The PRP aims to ensure easy access to information that the pubic needs to understand that role and access College services.

The College also has a Patient Relations Committee whose primary objectives focus on the College’s sexual abuse prevention plan as required by the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) including the following;

• Promoting policy of zero tolerance towards all aspects sexual abuse as identified in the RHPA;
• Providing guidelines and learning resources for members, like those listed below, to prevent and eradicate sexual abuse and support excellence in patient/member relations;
• Administering and evaluating the effectiveness of the fund for therapy and counseling for patients who have been sexually abused;
• Identifying other issues and trends that are important to maintaining excellent patient relations.
