Guidelines for evaluating professional practice activities
Professional Practice staff launched a new practice resource (PDF) for registrants and other laboratory stakeholders to assist them in answering the question: “Can I or am I allowed to do this activity?”
The guideline:

• uses a 4-step framework to break down complex concepts into actionable processes
• prompts stakeholders to ask important questions
• contains an appendix that provides specific examples.

The Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB) is undertaking a review of occupational language benchmarks on behalf of the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR). All Canadian-certified medical laboratory technologists currently working as MLTs are invited to complete a short survey to share how they use their English language skills at work. 

Please complete the survey by Friday, November 26, 2021. This survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Please complete the survey only once.

Survey findings will be explored in more detail through one-to-one interviews with MLTs from across Canada.

The report illustrates the CMLTO's key accomplishments in fulfilling its mission/mandate to protect the public's right to safe, high-quality health care through self-regulation and leadership of the medical laboratory technology profession. The CMLTO's Annual Registration Renewal for 2022 begins November 1, 2020. All medical laboratory technologists registered in Ontario must renew their CMLTO registration online by December 31, 2021.

The Annual Registration Renewal notice, which includes renewal instructions, was sent by postal mail in the third week of October. Members can get started by logging into CMLTO online services or by clicking the red button above.

The CMLTO will be closed for the statutory Thanksgiving holiday on October 11, 2021. Regular hours resume at 8:30 am on October 12th.

On behalf of the CMLTO Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce the appointment of John Tzountzouris as the new CMLTO Registrar & CEO. John’s tenure begins on October 4, 2021.

John has worked at the CMLTO since 2009, beginning as Senior Policy & Knowledge Management Specialist, and most recently as Director, Registration & Professional Practice since 2017.

John received a BSc in Biochemistry from McMaster University in 1996 and a diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (Molecular Genetics) in 1997 from The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences. He went on to receive a Bachelor’s in Health Administration and a Master’s in Public Policy from Ryerson University. John was designated a Governance System Professional by Govern for Impact in 2020.

Since 2019 John has volunteered on the Board of Girls Inc. Durham that began as a branch of the Big Sisters movement and advocates on behalf of girls and delivers life-changing programs and experiences. He currently serves as Board President.

The CMLTO Board looks forward to working with John to continue protecting Ontarians through self-regulation of the medical laboratory technology profession.

As we head toward Fall 2021, the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table advises that Ontario “is in the 4th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our models, federal models, and models in other jurisdictions predict a substantial 4th wave.”

The CMLTO Board of Directors supports the Table’s September 1st statement that vaccination offers substantial protection against severe health outcomes. Its modelling suggests that there will be “a rapid increase in the number of seriously ill people needing hospital care as workplaces and education re-open in September.” As such, the CMLTO office and Board will continue to operate virtually until further notice.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is deploying its last mile strategy to reach eligible Ontarians who haven’t received a first or second vaccine. On September 1st the Ontario government announced that it “will require people to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of their vaccination status to access certain businesses and settings starting September 22, 2021.”

On September 14th, the government released “the regulations and guidance for businesses and organizations to support them in implementing proof of vaccination requirements” when they take effect next week.
