Lab Test Information

The results of your lab tests are critical to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and medical conditions.

Every day, approximately 7,000 medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) in Ontario perform nearly half a million lab tests on blood, body fluids, and tissues. MLTs contribute to your care by doing everything from collecting specimens, to carrying out and monitoring procedures, to interpreting findings.

As regulated health professionals, MLTs are held accountable for their conduct and practice by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), whose mandate is public protection. All members of the CMLTO meet strict training, safety and ethical standards, so you can have complete confidence in the MLTs doing your lab tests.

In Ontario, your lab test can be ordered by several types of health care professionals; you cannot order a test yourself. In this section, find the answers to common questions about lab tests (Who takes your blood samples? How to get a copy of your results?) and links to other resources, and learn more about the role of these health care professionals and the trust your test public awareness campaign.
